Sketchy Medical is a visual memory aid for medical students, where “sketches” are drawn to represent key components of a virus, drug, disease, etc. While the sketch is being drawn, a narrator talks through the sketch and explains what each symbol represents. Currently, Sketchy offers sketches for microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy.

Watch the video below to see an example of navigating in Sketchy.

Sketches

Sketchy videos start out as a blank canvas that fills as a narrator explains the importance of the symbols. These symbols are used consistently throughout sketches, so they have the same meaning in different videos.

Watch the example below to find the following symbols:

"Hot Apple" pie + glass capsule

Streptococcus pyogenes produces a hyaluronic acid capsule, a critical virulence factor that helps it evade host immune defenses.

Beta light bulb

Streptococcus pyogenes demonstrates beta-hemolysis, which refers to the ability to completely lyse hemoglobin—clear, transparent zones around colonies on blood agar.
