Slack channels: Public vs. private

Get the most out of your Slack channels!

Public

  • Anyone can find and join
  • You don’t have to join the channel to see content
  • Great for interest groups and information channels, like MedTech!

Private

  • You must be invited to join
  • Even MedTech can’t see what private channels have been created or what content they hold
  • Best for small groups (like CBL) or other content not meant to be accessed by the entire college.

Etiquette

  • Use @channel sparingly. It’s best for time-sensitive or important information.
  • Avoid cross-posting on more than three channels!

Channel management

  • Before creating a new channel, check to see if something similar already exists!

  • Use consistent prefixes (like #IG_) to keep things organized for yourself and your classmates.

  • Archive channels that are no longer needed, like CBL groups.

Brownie Points!

Add a channel topic so newcomers know what to expect from that channel. It's also helpful to add the intended audience to the channel.
