In a typical year, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Global Health Conference & Exhibition brings together nearly 45,000 health information and technology professionals, clinicians, executives, and market suppliers from around the world. As we all know, 2021 is not a typical year.
HIMSS did what it could under these circumstances and managed to pull off both in person and virtual conference options. The College of Medicine was able to send 2 employees and 6 students to Las Vegas for the in-person conference. One student attended the virtual option of the event. Vaccinations and masks were required, and the organizers spread the event across 3 massive hotels to disperse the masses.
The event is truly world class, with exceptional education sessions, cutting-edge products, and powerful networking with a diverse group of healthcare leaders are hallmarks of this industry-leading conference.
Five Technology Trends That We Learned About
- 1. Telehealth
- Health systems believe that up to 40% of primary care visits could be done via VIRTUAL VISIT. Willingness to use telehealth by patients has increased to 66%.
- 2. Remote patient monitoring and consumer digital health
- Encourages preventive care models
- Extends monitoring of chronic conditions
- Helps patients/providers make more informed,
data-driven decisions - Increases patient awareness, activation and self-care
- 3. Behavioral health technologies
- Extends care to those who might not otherwise have access. Increases specialist provider options for those with limited local providers.
- 4. Testing, tracking, and diagnostics
- Detects disease earlier with increased accuracy
- Improves population health
- 5. Health equity and community-centric innovations
- Highlight pandemic data to drive investment in health equity and increase access for populations with limited resources
HIMSS is a strong mix of
education, innovation, and networking
Two of our students participated in the Student Case Competition, which provides opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in understanding the health information and technology. Anna Tang and Shi Min Tan were awarded second place for their efforts!
The group who attended HIMSS will be organizing a special lunch-and-learn session to share more about what they learned soon.
