The MedTech team is always on the lookout for ways to enhance learning through technology. The Teaching with Technology series highlights different strategies to engage and encourage participation on Zoom and in-person.

We invite you to learn more about our latest procurement, Kahoot!

Teaching with technology  Kahoot!

What

Kahoot! is a gamification eLearning tool integrated in PowerPoint or as a stand-alone item. Gamification is the application of typical elements of game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity, typically as a teaching technique to encourage engagement with curricular content or as a way to review curricular content.

Faculty can add videos, photos, and rationales for correct answers to reduce the numbers of questions emailed.

Why

Studies have shown that incorporating games leads to behavioral engagement in the classroom, as well as more regularity in class attendance, leadership, and teamwork abilities in students. If “having fun” were a learning objective, Kahoot! would be meeting it!

Who

Dr. Julie Kaczmark uses this tool! Dr. Kaczmark contacted our team to find additional strategies for audience participation. We provided 15 minutes of training, and she created a fantastic radiology review game that students used to gauge their understanding.

She assigned the Kahoot! in E.Flo MD with a link for students to play it on their own. She could log into Kahoot! to see who completed it and in which areas students were still struggling. Win-win!

More from Dr. Kaczmark about her experience using Kahoot!

  • The program is easy to use and very easy to embed the radiology images within the program.

  • Kahoot! ran easily and integrated well into the session.

  • Students engaged and had fun with the questions.

  • Students who used Kahoot! after the session said that it helped them gauge if they achieved the learning objectives.

  • It's nice that it can be used in the session or after—if the instructor runs out of time to do the Kahoot! in class, it can be an after-class learning exercise.

  • I will definitely utilize this and plan to integrate Kahoot! into most, if not all, of my large-group sessions.

  • Kahoot! opens up many more options for question formats to keep things new and interesting.

  • Allows instructors to ask questions in a variety of ways—it's not limited to multiple choice.

Time

Creating multiple choice questions or true/false questions is quick. When you are ready to play, you display the Join Kahoot! number and students can enter that number on their iPad or phone app or browser within seconds. Don’t have time to create your own? That’s ok: You can use thousands of pre-made content—or our team can create one for you!
