You see our names behind Slack posts, email messages, and E.Flo communications—but who is the Office of Technology, really? Get to know us a little more (and see which treats we prefer, if you want to bring some by).
Meet Ariane Smith, who often gets to choose the fonts in the learning materials—is there a better job?
What brought you to the College of Medicine?
CBL! I started working in publishing in 2002 and have edited or designed (or both) hundreds of scholarly books and journals on the exploration and development of the American West (think Lewis and Clark, the gold rush, Oregon Trail, etc.). When I learned that the College of Medicine had made the decision to use iBooks as its Case-Based Learning (CBL) format, I sent a message to Erika Fleck and passed muster with Carl Heine (the first CBL director), and the rest is history.
What kind of projects are you working on?
This is a very exciting time in the Office of Technology. The Digital Publishing team is working on a rollout of a new CBL production process, as well as getting the Medicine Digital Learning site fully fleshed out, with a new Dissector for the MS1s and MS2s, as well as some great material for the clerkship students. Not to mention this fancy new website—there is so much potential here!
How did you spend your summer days off?
I’ve spent the summer camping on stunning lakes in Washington, Idaho, and Montana with my favorite people. Aren’t we lucky to live in such a wonderful place?
What do you love about living in Spokane?
Spokane has the best weather of anywhere I’ve ever lived—four perfect seasons. Just as the gray of February becomes unbearable, I’ve got daffodils poking up their heads, and when the sun starts be feel like a sizzle, voilà: we’ve got the gorgeous fall colors starting.
What is your favorite kind of cookie?
Chocolate chip, of course, with M&Ms mixed in for some color and crunch. I prefer cookies with a cake-y texture, which comes from lots of cornstarch and chilling the dough.
